The math department at Linus Pauling uses a proficiency-based grading system that follows a 90/10 format. You can read more about this in the attached document.
85% of Grade (Quests and Projects)
Each of our lessons is directed towards providing students engaging and rigorous activities that help develop their mastery of standards. Students will be assessed each week on a standard(s) that we have been focusing on. Every assessment will be graded using a five point rubric. A copy is inserted below:
- 90% of overall grade is based on skills and proficiency of the common core state standards for mathematics.
- Assessments include Quests (quizzes/tests) and Projects. Retakes will be offered on all quests, but not on end of unit assessments. Students will be required to complete a retake form. The retake form is in the attachments at the bottom of this page and in my classroom. The highest score a student can achieve on a retake is 80%.
- 10% of overall grade is based on participation and daily assignments.

15% of Grade (Participation and Assignments)
Homework is assigned on average of 3-4 nights per week and is to be completed in your math notebook. Unless stated otherwise, it is due the following day. You are responsible for correcting the assignment before class. Homework grading:
3 = work is not complete, several errors OR work was turned in late
5= finished and corrected
5 = already shown mastery of the math standard; worked on another math assignment/project
Pinnacle is usually updated weekly. HW Assignment grades do not change, as they are a reflection of the student’s daily study habit.
